Tomislav Gotovac performed Sickle, Hammer and Red Star for the first time in October 1984 at the main square in Zagreb. He was dressed in blue workers overall, holding wooden hammer and sickle in his hands, while red star was painted on his shaven forehead. Moving slowly, he took heroic poses and gestures known from socialist-realism iconography. For a passionate movie fan like Gotovac was, this was homage to filmmakers of the Soviet Avant-Garde, while for all citizens of Yugoslavia this imaginary was closely connected to spectacular celebration of Marshall Tito’s birthday. On several other occasions, Gotovac used the same outfit and props for performances held in galleries: this photo was made in while performing in Sarajevo in 1986.
